New York Society of Women Artists (NYSWA)

Founded in 1925 by a group of noteworthy avant garde female artists in New York and incorporated as a New York State not-for-profit organization in 1950, the New York Society of Women Artists (NYSWA) celebrates its Centennial in 2025. The organization included notable founding members such as the late Theresa Bernstein, Anne Goldthwaite, and Marguerite Zorach, NYSWA’s first president. The Organization’s longevity has evolved into an inter-generational, multi-ethnic membership limited to 60 members by charter, all engaged in supporting equality and equity for female artists. By fostering a collaborative spirit among its members, the organization amplifies the impact of its creative output to gain parity in the art market, push boundaries, and redefine the role of women in the arts.
