About this event

  • Event lasts 40 minutes

This free event is intended to help you mark out a little time on your calendar for writing and meeting other poets. Don't let the word "poet" here be intimidating: writers of all abilities, including beginners, are welcome. The only requirement is that you'd like to try writing alongside poets and that you come ready to support others.

How it works: we'll say hello, I'll bring a short reading to set the right mood, and then for the majority of the session each of us will work on whatever writing project we'd like. I often provide a simple prompt as well. Then there will be ten minutes at the end where people can optionally share what they're working on (either by actually reading their work aloud, or just describing what they accomplished) and/or generally have some time to connect.

Agenda (40 minutes total):

  • 5 minutes of introduction
  • 25 minutes of silent writing time (microphones off, video optional)
  • 10 minutes at the end to share what we’ve written (optional, with feedback focused on being supportive), ask questions of the group, and connect

This event is hosted by Meg Hartmann at Ah - the Sea. You can learn about classes and other upcoming events here.

Frequently asked questions

How many people do you expect at each session?

There's usually a small group of 2-5 people at each session and these events are fairly interactive. However, the maximum attendees is set to 10, so it's possible that some end up being larger. You should be able to see how many people have signed up for each session.

Can I sign up at the last minute?

Registration closes two hours before each session.

Organized by

Ah – the Sea is a small project with the goal of opening people (both writers and readers) to all kinds of poetry, and exploring how poems achieve their effects (as opposed to what meaning they serve). Poetry can teach a way of being that is slower, more thoughtful, and more resonant than our day-to-day experience (especially in our current faster-than-ever digital world), and can perhaps be an antidote to our marketing-saturated culture. The hope is that the website will foster more truly respectful relationships, patience, and openness among those who come across it. This may be a vain hope. (Can poetry better us? Should it?) But when we engage with a poem, we enter a different space, one that’s often at odds with our regular experience.
