This will be a FREE online workshop that will meet on Zoom on Tuesday evenings 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm EST and on Saturday Mornings at 9:00 am - 10:30 am EST for five weeks. Attendance weekly at either meeting is mandatory.

Participants are limited to 20.

This writing workshop encourages creative expression about current events in all literary genres, i.e., Fiction/Non Fiction/Poetry/Graphic.

The first half hour we will discuss our current writing and then proceed to a generative writing session that will be a half hour. The final half hour will be a share.

The objective is to publish a literary journal of our writing that reflects the time we shared together as writers. will meet in person to coordinate an in-person reading in late spring. The in-person reading is voluntary and will be recorded for broadcast on BRICArtsMedia and Youtube.

Preference will be given to residents of Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.

Participants must be able to attend the workshop on Zoom.


Frequently asked questions

Is this free?

There is no cost to you to participate in this workshop. You can obtain a Zoom subscription for free. You will be given at least five copies of the journal we produce. It will ultimately be available to you as a pdf.

Do I need to be a published to participate?

No, that is not required. The workshop is limited to 20 participants, the email you send containing your short bio and writing experience, will give us an idea of your ability to produce at least 3-5 pieces over the course of the workshop for inclusion in the journal.

What if I can't commit to every Tuesday at 7pm?

The group will meet twice a week for five weeks. You will have the option of attending either meeting.

Do I retain rights to my work?

We ask only for first publication rights. However, if you write something during the workshop you maintain all rights to your work and can opt not to submit it for the journal.

The reading will be in-person, and I am out of state, will you provide a travel stipend?

Yes, we will have an in-person reading. Unfortunately, we have no budget for travel expenses. We ask that you be located in New York City, with preference given to writers living in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, due to the request of our sponsor.

This workshop will be led by Desiree Rucker, MFA, Creative Writing. She is the Producer of Culture Matters TV. In addition to years of experience producing arts television on BCAT/Bricartsmedia, Desiree writes screenplays, plays, poetry and short stories. Culture Matters TV is broadcast on all cable networks in New York and airs online on Bricartsmedia on their Free Speech Network's Channel 1, the first Saturday of the month at 2pm.
