A popular destination for year-round hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, 5,600-acre Kittatinny Valley State Park features four glacial lakes, four rail-trails, and a small airport. Lake Aeroflex, Gardner’s Pond, and Twin Lakes form part of the headwaters of the Pequest River and are excellent for fishing and boating (electric motors only).

Extending into three counties, the Paulinskill Valley Trail, Sussex Branch Trail, Great Valley Rail-Trail, and Lehigh & Hudson River Rail-Trail are former railroads that have been converted as multiple-use trails for non-motorized activities. These railroads were critical to the development of Sussex County through the mid-1800’s and early 1900’s. The wide cinder surface is ideal for jogging and when snow conditions permit these trails provide an excellent opportunity for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
