Experience the unique history and natural beauty of Gray's Creek in Surry, Virginia.
Designated as part of Virginia's Scenic Rivers Program in 2020, Gray's Creek was first navigated by the Indigenous People of the Coastal Virginia region and later explored by Captain John Smith of Jamestown fame. An attempted second colonial fort began construction by Smith along the creek in 1609; and, although never completed, the raised earthworks remain on the property of Smith's Fort Plantation within view of Gray's Creek.
Guided tours begin next to the Surry Seafood Company Restaurant on Saturday, May 10, 2025 where there is event parking and a bathhouse available. Gray’s Creek is sheltered from strong coastal winds and currents and allows guests access to marshes and swamps that support various species of wildlife and waterfowl. Your guide will share how this tranquil waterway is steeped in history and will introduce guests to many species of plants and animals.
