Like Batman, The Mummy, The Leprechaun, Frosty the Snowman, Swamp Thing, and even Mary Poppins: GIRLS LIKE HORROR RETURNS!!

Join us on Saturday, April 12th for the return of Mount Vernon Cemetery's Girls Like Horror Members Only True Terror Tour & Trivia Contest! Warmer weather meets bone-chilling TRUE & TERROR-ific tales of Philadelphia's long-neglected Mount Vernon Cemetery (MVC). Although MVC has been closed to the public for decades, the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery, in collaboration with Girls Like Horror Film Club, will be opening its rusty iron gates to take horror fans on a unique journey through the blighted 169-year-old cemetery's mysterious and tragedy-riddled past. Spoiler alert: Be prepared for the uncanny as MVC is covered in, as the New York Post declared: "creepy stuffed animals that inexplicably appear overnight." In other words... "Be afraid. Be very afraid."

This adults-only tour showcases the more macabre aspects of MVC’s history; tales of murder, suicide, and hoodoo. And while it's unlikely these stories will "tear your soul apart" Hellrasier-style, they are guaranteed to send shivers up your spine in ways true horror fans will truly enjoy.

PLUS: Think you know horror movies? If you’re brave enough, come test your murder movie mettle and take part in our Horror Movie Trivia Contest - basically horror movie quizzo meets a walking tour. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 teams! Be sure to bring your A game and B-movie game though. We show no mercy when it comes to question difficulty.

PLUS!: Special guests, Movie Jawn, will have a table set up and they will be slinging zines, merch, and movie knowledge like our lives depended on it. And hey, it’s a day all about horror inside a locked up overgrown cemetery… maybe our lives will depend on it!??!

PLUS!!: We’re thrilled to announce that Vanity Tintype will also be in attendance, taking authentic tintypes of visitors amidst the vines and tombstones!!

***Please note, tintypes are not part of general admission and are a separate event/fee. Sign up at the link below. Spaces are extremely limited.

Content warning/Reminders:

  • MVC's True Horror Tour will include discussions of an adult nature that may be distressing to some visitors. Topics include tales of murder, suicide, death, and infant mortality via disease.
  • This tour is for ADULTS ONLY. Anyone under the age of 18 will be turned away.
  • Please meet at MVC's main gate. Located at the corner of Ridge and Lehigh Avenues.
  • The tour will be going offroad. Regardless of weather, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable closed-toed shoes and long pants. BUG SPRAY is recommended.
  • It is essential to arrive on time. Tour leaves at precisely 11am and we are a 28 acre property. If you arrive late, once the gate is closed and locked, there is no coming back for you.
  • MVC is in a court-appointed conservatorship. As such, all visitors will need to sign an access waiver. Paperwork will be provided upon arrival.
  • All visitors are required to follow all rules and guidelines set forth by the cemetery's conservators and by the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery. Failure to adhere to these rules will result in immediate expulsion from the grounds without refund, and you will be banned from participating in future MVC public events.

Frequently asked questions

Is there parking at the cemetery?

No parking inside the cemetery. But there is FREE parking right outside along Lehigh Ave. We're also just a short walk from the East Falls Regional Rail Train Station.

Can I bring kids/dogs

Sorry. No to both. Consider this the walking tour equivalent of an NC-17 movie. No kids allowed.

My family is buried there. Can I ditch the tour and walk around on my own to look for them?

Absolutely not. Attendees - regardless of ancestral connection to MVC - MUST stay with the group at all times. Anyone who does not follow the rules set forth by the Friends will be immediately ejected from the property without refund and banned from future programming.

Can I take photographs?

Yes. Any and all handheld, non-commercial photography is encouraged. Just be sure to tag us on Instagram @mtvernoncemetery.

Do you have bathrooms?

No. But we are 28 acres of green space (hint hint). Just watch out for zombies and groundhogs first.

Are you handicap accessible?

While we're all about inclusivity and accessibility, MVC's grounds are still in a severe state of blight - which includes its roads. As such, MVC tours are NOT recommended for those with mobility issues or that require assistance getting around via canes or wheelchairs. Sorry! We're working on it!

What if there's bad weather?

We will evaluate and reschedule for another date.
