Graft Your Own Apple and Locust Trees

About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

Have you ever dreamed of creating your own fruiting trees or perfecting your grafting skills? This is your chance to learn from an expert in a stunning agroforestry setting! Join us for an immersive Grafting Workshop led by Zach Elfers, tree crops enthusiast, small nursery operator, and lifelong student of nature.

About the Workshop:

In this hands-on, three-hour session, you’ll learn the art and science of grafting while creating your own grafted tree to take home. Zach will guide you through:

  • Benefits of grafting
  • Selection of grafting stock and scion wood
  • Knife Safety and Techniques
  • Focus on Bench Grafting while also covering Top Working and Budding
  • Hands-on practice with expert feedback

Each student will have grafted at least three trees and will leave with at least one viable grafted tree. (Apple and/or Honeylocust) Students are welcome to bring their own materials to practice with Zach.

Students should bring a notebook, re-usable water bottle, a grafting knife (Zach recommend either Victorinux Fixed or Folding Grafting Knives) We will have some equipment available to borrow. Please reach out if you would like to borrow grafting knives or need other accommodations and we will help!

Note that the terrain is hilly and there will be some walking involved so please bring good walking shoes and if you need accommodations for access, please notify us and we can help you!

Note that there is only a primitive toilet on site.

Parking is limited so we encourage carpooling, if possible.

Whether you’re a curious beginner or an aspiring orchardist, this workshop is designed to provide practical skills you can use right away.
