Learn basic bonsai techniques to start transforming plants into bonsai. We cover the basics: when to repot, how to water, what makes a good soil mix, and how to prune. This is an appropriate class for total beginners wanting to learn more about this art form of caring for trees.
In this class we will work on the beginner friendly Ficus microcarpa, or Banyan Tree. Ficus are often considered a beginner's bonsai for their relatively easy care. They can tolerate a wide range of light conditions, and temperatures between 50-80F. Banyans can survive in lower light locations, providing more opportunities for placement around the home. The growth style of the ficus tree creates a main trunk that divides into smaller branches that support a dense canopy. These smaller branches can be pruned and wired for recreating some of the most popular bonsai shapes and styles. With enough humidity, this tree will sport aerial roots that hang from their branches. The banyan tree has a strong spiritual significance with its long connection to meditating and inner-strength.
