Texier House -Open house - Watchung History comes alive!


In the middle of the Watchung circle is a museum of Watchung history, facts and artifacts.

It can be visited during the twice a month open house, usually the 1st and 3rd Sunday, where volunteer guides can show you around or you can wander through the 5 rooms and read the descriptions of collect of memorabilia about Watchung past and current residents and places.

Plenty of convent free parking.

Watchung Life Room

  • Artifacts from Sports Memorabilia Bobby Thomas (Watchung resident) who hit historic a three-run homer that he hit off Ralph Branca of the Brooklyn Dodgers that put the New York Giants in the World Series, sometimes called The Shot Heard 'Round the World to put N.Y. Giants in 1951 World Series
  • History of Watchung Schools
  • Remembrances from Adella (Tibby)Wotherspoon, the youngest (then 6 months old) survivor or the Sinking of the General Slocum in 1904 where 1,021 of the 1,331 passengers died in the NYC’s East River (the most tragic event until the 2001 World Trade). Tibby lived most of her life in Watchung and was active in the Watchung Historical Commission with maintains and staffs the Texier House Museum.

Castle Room

  • Diorama with 3 sides - Watchung Vllage of late 1800, Moldenke Catle in the Snow, and early Lenopi village
  • Skylight and other items from the Moldenke’s Elsinore Castle that stood on Valley Road and Elsinor from 1900 to 1950

Eaton Room

  • Photos and possessions of Charles Aubrey Eaton, clergyman, journalist, U.S. congressman from NJ and a signatory to original United Nations Charter
  • Original diary of Captain Parlin, who led the first black battalion of soldiers during the Civil War. Also his distal and other items used.

Media Room

  • WW I & WW II memorablia a siren used to alert resident during WW II that you can operate and mke a LOUD noise

  • Photos of Watchung homes from the 1700s and how they look today
  • Watchung caledar from the 1950s that listed birdays and other events of Watchung families
