About this event

The most successful government agencies are using public messaging proactively to build positive relationships with their communities long before any crisis strikes. Designed for PIOs and leaders who oversee the public message, this fast-paced, engaging, one-day training takes students through the use of social media strategies to tell their agency’s story and interacting with the traditional media to amplify their message. Topics include:

  • Messaging in Real Time through Social Media (with case study)
  • Managing Misinformation Online and in the Media
  • Uncovering Good News Stories that Resonate
  • Navigating Negativity
  • Building Mutually Beneficial Relationships with the Media
  • Understanding Legal Considerations for Government Social Media
  • Practical Exercises

Telling your agency's good news story benefits the agency and the community it serves. Simultaneously there are things you can be doing to prepare for the inevitable crisis. Spend the day learning from Emilie (Voss) Eager, who has proven success managing social media to build trust through engagement.

Emilie Eager brings a diverse background, merging her media, law enforcement and public relations expertise. Previously, Julie Parker hired her to help lead the Media Relations Bureau for the Fairfax County Police Department in Virginia. While there she graduated from the PERF Senior Management Institute for Police. She was also honored as a 3-time Emmy award winning journalist during an extensive broadcast career. Emilie joins Julie Parker Communications after overseeing public relations for CARFAX, a leading brand in automotive.

Julie Parker has a unique media background having served as both a Washington, DC TV news reporter, a talk show host and as the media relations director for two large police departments, effectively reporting from both sides of the crime tape. She currently runs Julie Parker Communications, the consultancy she founded in 2014. Julie worked for both the Fairfax County (VA) and the Prince George’s County (MD) Police Departments, leading large media teams that operated like newsrooms. Under her leadership, the police media bureaus successfully increased transparency and improved public trust. In these roles, Julie drew heavily upon her experience at WJLA-TV, the ABC affiliate in Washington, DC. In her capacity as a journalist, she earned both Emmy and Edward R. Murrow awards. She was a general assignment reporter, covering such stories as the Beltway Sniper, the September 11th attacks and the Oscars, live from Hollywood. Julie has also served as the Senior Media Advisor for the International Association of Chiefs of Police. She is a regular guest lecturer at the FBI National Academy and a subject matter expert with the Center for Homeland Defense and Security, focusing on crisis communications, media relations best practices and the use of social media in both emergencies and for community engagement.
