This summer, The Wren’s Nest will bring back its Scribes Summer Camp for middle-school age students on July 7 to 11 from 9am-4pm EDT. Students are invited to embark on a literary adventure to develop the craft of writing and sharpen their storytelling skills in workshops led by local teaching artist and published author Hugh “H.D.”Hunter.
Every day, campers will be treated to exclusive insights from guest speakers across the storytelling genre, including journalists, musicians, performers, and creative writers, as they unveil the secrets behind their success.
Camp will conclude with a Scribes Showcase, a platform for our young storytellers to celebrate their creative talents with their family and friends.
About SCRIBES
At The Wren’s Nest, our mission is to cultivate the next generation of writers and readers by championing the power of using your voice to tell your story. The Scribes program was created in 2010 to broaden creative writing education and mentorship for middle-grade students.
This year's week-long summer camp is open to middle-grade students in Georgia. Space is limited to 12 students. Admission will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. The $300 registration fee for students includes workshop attendance, museum admission, a notebook and writing utensil, and light refreshments.
The Wren’s Nest does not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, sexual orientation, disabilities, or national or ethnic origin. At the Scribes Summer Camp, we encourage students to ask questions, discuss ideas, and work together to make their experience interesting and fun. Above all, we encourage them to treat each other with respect and kindness so that everyone feels confident and valued.
The Scribes Summer Camp is made possible by the Gable Foundation.
The Wren’s Nest and this Scribes program are supported in part by the Gable Foundation, the City of Atlanta Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs, the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, and the Georgia Council for the Arts through appropriations of the Georgia General Assembly. Georgia Council for the Arts also receives support from its partner agency - the National Endowment for the Arts.

Summer camp is Monday, July 7 – Friday, July 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. EDT
Drop-off and pick-up will be in the vestibule just inside the FRONT door of The Wren's Nest. Parents/guardians must SIGN CAMPERS IN AND OUT IN PERSON before and after the workshop. If someone other than a student’s parent or legal guardian picks them up, we require prior written notice.
We will provide notebooks and writing utensils for students. Campers are allowed to have cell phones during the summer camp but are discouraged from using them during the hours of instruction, snack, and lunch times. The Wren’s Nest is not responsible for any items that are lost, broken, or stolen.
We are excited to partner with professional local writers, each of whom brings deep knowledge and experience to the classroom. Local author Hugh “H.D.” Hunter will again lead this year’s camp. Wren’s Nest staff will be on site to greet students and parents/guardians and facilitate a smooth workshop.
In order to facilitate a meaningful learning experience that fits our unique venue, each workshop will have a maximum capacity of 12 students.
The camp curriculum contains generative writing exercises and prompts, as well as time for breakout discussions and activities. While campers may not leave with a fully written new story, they’ll go home with plenty of ideas to keep their writing going afterward!
