The event consists of six 90-minute masterclass sessions spread over two days. Attendees can join the sessions live or, by purchasing a ticket, can access recordings of all six sessions to view at any time later. The sessions are as follows:


Thursday 19th June

9.30 Session 1: The key learning concepts.

The origin and evidence base for Rosenshine's Principles. How ideas from cognitive science underpin the principles and the main ideas teachers can focus on. The organisation of Rosenshine's Principles in four strands.

11.00 Break.

11.30 Session 2: Strand 1. Sequencing concepts, modelling and scaffolding.

The importance of breaking learning into small steps, the power of modelling with a clear hand-over period and the nature of effective scaffolds for difficult tasks.

1.00 pm LUNCH

1.45 Session 3: Strand 2. Questioning and Checking for Understanding.

All-important questioning techniques for securing attention and eliciting evidence of learning from all students in an interactive, responsive manner.

3.15 Day 1 Plenary: Questions.

Friday 20th June

9.30 Session 4: Strand 3. Reviewing Material

Multiple difference ways teachers can engage students in meaningful retrieval practice opportunities for Daily Review or Weekly and Monthly review.

11.00 Break

11.30 Session 5: Strand 4. Stages of Practice

The important flow from guided practice through to independent practice with a high success rate, taking examples from a range of subject contexts.

1.45 Session 6: Mode A and Mode B - a wider context.

Taking the ideas from Tom's book The Learning Rainforest, how does instructional 'Mode A' teaching fit alongside techniques and activities that are typically more student-led and offer opportunities for fostering independent learning, creativity and student agency.
