Tompkins Corners Cultural Center will present Rob Flax’s Boom Chick Trio on Saturday, April 5th, at 7:30 pm. Equal parts hot swing, snarky songwriting, and lyrical storytelling, this energetic trio of virtuoso violin, guitar, and upright bass, with three-part harmony vocals, will transport you to a speakeasy in the back of a bar.
“Hotshot swing, crackerjack instrumentals, superb harmonies & hysterical stagecraft” —The Folk Project
Rob Flax possesses a rare combination of skills: he is an award-winning violinist, classically trained but known for his jazz and improvisational pyrotechnics and irresistible grooves, plus a deep knowledge of American fiddle traditions. He's also a powerhouse vocalist, capable of silky crooning a la Nat King Cole or visceral Chicago blues shouts. He is a consummate songwriter with lyrical depth to complement the instrumental virtuosity.
With Slava Tolstoy on guitar, known for his “International String Trio,” which fuses Gypsy Jazz with World Music, and Noah Harrington, an award-winning bassist, composer, bandleader, and educator from Lexington, Massachusetts, the Trio elevates Rob's eclectic originals with intricate instrumental interplay, tight vocal harmonies, and irreverent humor.
These three string-wielding maestros have forged a powerful group dynamic developed over years of gigging and concerts. You might not be able to sit still in your seat, but you’ll have a smile on your face most of the show!
Tickets may also be purchased at the door. Refreshments, including beer and wine, will be available by donation.
