About this event
- Event lasts 2 hours
This hike is the first in a year-long series of preserve exploration hikes. Rannels Kettle Run is one of Lancaster Conservancy’s most northern preserves. The late-successional forest at this nature preserve contains many large trees and snags which provide ample homes for birds, insects, and small mammals. As we hike, we’ll talk about how decaying trees play a vital role in keeping other elements of the forest alive and healthy.
This area of forest is prone to keeping snow on the ground longer than other areas in Lancaster County. If there is snow, we’ll bring tracking guidebooks along to try to identify what we’re seeing.
Where to Meet: We will meet at the Upper Hopewell Forge Wildlife Sanctuary parking lot on Pumping Station Road; GPS Coordinates: 40.238851, -76.336638
What to Expect: Our 2.5-mile hike route includes a section of the Horseshoe Trail and side trails. This hike is well-suited to those comfortable with a long uphill and will include a half mile where we will gain 500 feet in elevation gain. At the top of this uphill climb, we'll enjoy a steady downhill walk along a ridgetop. There are no restrooms on site. This event is for ages 13 and up (participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult).
What to Bring: Bring water, snacks, pertinent personal first aid, sufficient layers, and hiking poles (optional).
Event Leader Bio: Before joining the Interpretive Ranger team in 2022, Kate Prisby partnered with Lancaster Conservancy in riparian buffer work at Climbers Run Nature Center and building the new trail system at Tucquan Glen and Pyfer Nature Preserves. She enjoys sharing the amazing landscapes Lancaster Conservancy stewards with others.
Animal Policy: Service animals active or in training are welcome. Please leave all pets at home.
