With poet Megan Pinto!

What, exactly, is a prose poem? Is it sonically charged language without line breaks? Flash fiction that ends with an image? (Are there any formal requirements?) And what opportunities can writing in this hybrid, mysterious form allow for? In this class we’ll explore these questions through close reading and discussion. Students will walk away with a basic understanding of lyric time vs narrative time, poetic density, and image. We’ll allow our narratives to take strange turns, and surprise ourselves with images, associative leaps, and play. This class is meant to be generative–all levels are welcome!

About the Instructor: Megan Pinto is the author of Saints of Little Faith, her debut collection, just out from Four Way Books. Her poems can be found in the Los Angeles Review of Books, Ploughshares, Lit Hub and elsewhere. She has won the Anne Halley Prize from the Massachusetts Review and an Amy Award from Poets & Writers, as well as scholarships and fellowships from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, the Martha’s Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing, the Port Townsend Writers’ Conference and Storyknife. Megan lives in Brooklyn and holds an MFA in poetry from Warren Wilson College.
