Prison Reimagined: Opening Reception

Wistariahurst welcomes an exhibit of artwork and writing by incarcerated artists critiquing the US Justice System. Prison Reimagined features a series of portraits of U.S. presidents and writing pieces that touch on peoples’experiences within the prison system. 

The project was organized by Curator and Artistic Director, Cadell “Monty” Kivett from inside a correctional facility in North Carolina. About the project’s inception, Cadell states, “...I had an improbable idea: Let's have incarcerated artists draw portraits of our presidents, then invite those subjects to see what we had drawn. This, I knew, if staged in proper context would make for powerful commentary on mass incarceration and criminal punishment in America.” Since the project’s inception in 2021, Prison Reimagined has grown to an exhibition featuring 23 written and 23 visual works. As the project expanded, Project Manager Janie Ritter and Outreach Coordinator Haley Bryant joined the team, helping push it forward.

The exhibition has traveled to several locations, and Wistariahurst is proud to be the next venue to showcase Prison Reimagined. The exhibit will be on view in Wistariahurst’s Great Hall, expanding the area of the museum where art installations are shown, and serving as the first installation visitors will see when they enter. An opening reception will be held Tuesday, April 15, 2025, from 4:30-6:30 pm. The opening reception is free and open to the public, and online registration is encouraged. Wistariahurst acoge una exposición de obras de arte y escritos de artistas encarcelados que critican el sistema judicial estadounidense. Prison Reimagined presenta una serie de retratos de presidentes de EE.UU. y escritos que abordan las experiencias de la gente dentro del sistema penitenciario.

El proyecto fue organizado por Cadell «Monty» Kivett, comisario y director artístico, desde el interior de un centro penitenciario de Carolina del Norte. Sobre el inicio del proyecto, Cadell afirma: "...Tuve una idea improbable: Hagamos que artistas encarcelados dibujen retratos de nuestros presidentes, y luego invitemos a esos sujetos a ver lo que habíamos dibujado. Sabía que esto, si se escenificaba en el contexto adecuado, sería un poderoso comentario sobre el encarcelamiento masivo y el castigo penal en Estados Unidos". Desde el inicio del proyecto en 2021, Prison Reimagined ha crecido hasta convertirse en una exposición con 23 obras escritas y 23 visuales. A medida que el proyecto crecía, Janie Ritter, directora del proyecto, y Haley Bryant, coordinadora de divulgación, se unieron al equipo para ayudar a impulsarlo.

La exposición ha viajado a varios lugares, y Wistariahurst se enorgullece de ser el próximo lugar en el que se mostrará Prison Reimagined. La exposición se podrá ver en el Gran Hall de Wistariahurst, ampliando la zona del museo donde se muestran instalaciones artísticas, y será la primera instalación que verán los visitantes al entrar. La recepción inaugural tendrá lugar el martes 15 de abril de 2025, de 16.30 a 18.30 horas. La recepción inaugural es gratuita y abierta al público, y se recomienda la inscripción en línea.
