  • Minimum of 6 students to confirm a class. If this is not met, the class will be cancelled and the students will be offered the option to transfer to another class.

DESCRIPTION

This course describes the roles and responsibilities, characteristics and key skills of an effective preceptor.

Greetings,

Thank you all for your interest in pursuing your preceptor competency as developed and available through the preceptor program and committee at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. This course describes the roles and responsibilities, characteristics and key skills of an effective preceptor.

Below you will find a list of prerequisites as well as in course requirements that you will need to adhere to in order to receive full credit for your course completion.

In- Course Requirements:

  • Participation in group activities is required as your input is valuable to all learners participating in the course.

After course requirements:

  • Complete survey
  • Complete 6 month follow up survey
  • Complete and maintain ongoing competency requirements

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe ethical challenges associated within the Preceptor relationship and how to mitigate them.
  • Understand preceptor roles and responsibilities, including policy and competency requirements and validation.
  • Identify 4 ways to assess or develop critical thinking the preceptee.
  • Describe the strategies that can be used to communicate or give feedback effectively.
  • Discuss and apply concepts to mitigate and prevent bullying or conflict within Preceptor/Preceptee relationship.
  • Describe ethical challenges associated within the Preceptor relationship and how to mitigate them.
  • ​Develop understanding about how to establish a strong therapeutic interpersonal peer to peer relationship in the Preceptor role.​
  • Apply knowledge, skills and attitudes gained from this workshop to their preceptor role.
  • Discuss how implicit bias (attitudes or opinions regarding – race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, socioeconomic status or other characteristics) that could impact the preceptor/preceptee relationship and how this indirectly impacts patient care outcomes.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

Center for Professional Excellence and Inquiry is accredited as provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC).

  • Number of ANCC Contact Hours: 3.5 hours

  • This FREE training is exclusively offered to Stanford Medicine Children's Health employees. For employment verification, please register using your stanfordchildrens.org work email and SCH employee ID number.

  • Join Waitlist: Please note that being on the waitlist does not guarantee enrollment to the course but it certainly increases your chances when an opening becomes available. Our waitlist is maintained on a first-come, first-served basis. Upon seat availability, you will be contacted automatically with further instructions on how to register.

CANCELLATION

  • NO SHOWS or cancellations on the day of class are considered unexcused absences. Managers will be notified. A medical note may be required in the event of illness or medical emergencies.
  • Cancellation by CPEI: Schedules, venues and details are subject to change and cancellation. Registered participants will be provided with as much advance notice as possible if this should occur.
