"Through poetry, we gain greater self-understanding as well as insight into others in our world and into our world itself. " Poetry As Spiritual Practice by Robert McDowell*
Inspired by the quoted text, this workshop will combine poetry and spirituality as inspiration for our writing practice. We will utilize a variety of readings, exercises and concepts from the book as a way into our own writing practice, in addition to using specific poems as prompts. While our focus will be on poetry, participants are encouraged to write in any form, style or genre they prefer.
For the purposes of this workshop spirituality is defined as seeking a connection with something larger than ourselves. Everybody is welcome regardless of religious affiliation, beliefs, etc. The goal is about intentionally connecting with poetry as a life enriching practice.
This is a creative writing workshop, and the focus will always be on the writing. A prompt will be offered for a specified writing period, usually between 10-20 minutes. Everybody will have the opportunity to share their writing and receive feedback, both of which are always optional. Responses to writing will focus on what is strong and memorable about the writing. All writing is treated as fiction and kept confidential.
You will receive an email with guidelines and Zoom link. Please check spam/junk folders or contact me if you do not receive confirmation email. Please try your best to be a few minutes early, so we can start on time. Workshop may be subject to cancellation or rescheduling due to low registrations.
While we will be referencing the book, it is not required for the workshop. I've included a where you can find more info and possible purchase a copy if you are interested.
