Petr Hruška, widely regarded as one of the most significant voices in contemporary Czech literature, will present the English edition of his award-winning collection, I Caught Sight of My Face (Kulturalis, 2024), translated by Joshua Mensch.

Inspired by The First Voyage around the World — Antonio Pigafetta's account of Magellan’s expedition written exactly 500 years ago — I Caught Sight of My Face reimagines this celebrated tale of discovery as an unsettling reflection on human nature.

This will mark Petr Hruška's second visit to New York, following his appearance last year with Everything Indicates: Selected Poems (Blue Diode, 2023), translated by Jonathan Bolton.

Joining him will be distinguished American poets, including Carolyn Forché and Jeffrey McDaniel. Additional participating poets will be announced soon.

Carolyn Forché (b.1950) is a poet, translator, and activist known for her “poetry of witness,” blending the personal and political. Her works include The Country Between Us, The Angel of History, and In the Lateness of the World. A Georgetown University professor, she has received numerous awards for her literary and human rights contributions.

Jeffrey McDaniel (b. 1967, Philadelphia) is the author of seven poetry collections, including Thin Ice Olympics (2022). His work, featured in Best American Poetry, has earned an NEA fellowship. He teaches at Sarah Lawrence College and lives in the Hudson Valley.
