About this event

Join us as we celebrate Maryland's 12th recognized forest in the Old-Growth Forest Network. This forest is an easy 40-minute drive north of Baltimore and is situated near the Prettyboy Reservoir. The old-growth site totals roughly 6 acres and is comprised of mostly Eastern hemlock, but older yellow birch is also prevalent.

Please be sure to wear appropriate footwear and bring layers as the weather might change, as well as plenty of water and snacks. Stay tuned for more details about the hike, such as meet up location and total estimated length. Three arking areas for 5-10 vehicles are distributed along Gunpowder Road. Please park in one of these areas and walk carefully to the event location. Please allow an additional 5-10 minutes to walk to the event location. The terrain is fairly level and flat here.

OUR WORK: Identify and Preserve

Our goal is to locate and designate at least one protected forest in every county in the United States that can sustain a native forest. We estimate that to be approximately 2,370 out of 3,140 total counties. To achieve this aim we work to identify forests for the Network, ensure their protection, and inform people of the forest locations. We are building not only a network of forests, but also an alliance of people who care about forests.
