The Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) Instructor course is designed to equip law enforcement officers with the skills to provide instruction on the administration of SFSTs. The class teaches techniques for instructing adult learners and how to apply those techniques to the SFST course material.

Course Description:

This course is a 32 hour classroom course which includes instruction on:

  • Effectively teaching and providing effective feedback to learners
  • Effective instruction principles & learning environments
  • SFST Curriculum Package
  • Effective Feedback, Coaching, and Proficiencies
  • Effectively Promoting Participation and Interaction
  • Dealing with Training Challenges
  • Developing and Using Training Aids
  • Effective Classroom Presentations
  • Planning & Managing a Live Alcohol Workshop

Course Prerequisite:

Students must have successfully completed the NHTSA basic SFST class and be compliant with all Colorado SFST Standards. Colorado Standards can be found at- CDOT SFST Standards . POST requires that you submit an ARIDE/SFST Instructor Affirmation Form prior to attending. Find the link for this for below. Bring the completed form with you to class.

You must be proficient with performing the SFST's prior to class. You will be tested on your SFST Proficicency's during this school.

Course Materials:

  • Please bring with you a laptop computer or tablet on which you can open PDF files and/or connect to a projection system. PowerPoint is required to run on your system.
  • You will be given digital files for the SFST Instructor Manual, SFST Student Manual and PowerPoint files.
  • You will receive a printed NHTSA SFST Train the Trainer class book.

Class Attendance/Cancellation:

  • You must attend all portions of this class to receive successfully complete the program. Please clear your schedule and court appearances upon registration.
  • If you find you cannot attend this class after you have registered, please log into Eventbrite and cancel your seat. This class is in high demand and others would gladly take your seat. If you are a "no show" you may be required to provide POST with a written explanation for your absence.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be proficient with my SFST's prior to attending this class?

Yes. You will need to be able to perform the SFST's to a near perfect level when you attend this class. If you have some minor adjustments/corrections, this can be addressed in class. It is normal to be a little "rusty" with your roadsides, we can help you.

Do I need to bring a computer with me to class?

Yes. This class will train you on how to present the material to adult learners. It is a PowerPoint based class. You will receive your Instructor and Student manuals digitally for easy distribution or printing.

Will I receive a printed manual?

Yes and No. You will receive a printed NHTSA Train the Trainer book. This book covers all of the materials that you will be tested on. Your SFST Student & Instructor manuals are digital.

Can I bring snacks or my lunch to class?

Absolutely. While every venue is different, we will help find you a suitable place to take your lunch break.

If I can't attend after registration, do I have to cancel my seat?

Yes. The SFST Instructor School classes are in high demand. If you can't make it any longer, please log into Eventbrite and cancel your seat. If you are a "no show" you may have to provide POST with a written explanation for your absence.
