What will you do?
Join Friends of the Fells on Fridays at Bellevue Pond from 1 pm to 3 pm to monitor and manage invasive plant species that threaten the valuable Fells ecosystem. We will use hand-pulling and manual tools to manage aggressive plant species such as Glossy buckthorn and Multiflora rose which outcompete local flora and fauna. Additionally, we will monitor the spread and effects of volunteer removal of invasive plants using the Earthwise Aware Invasive Flora Patrol project and Anecdata mobile app and website. All experience levels are welcome! Suitable for ages 12 and up.
This event will be held at Bellevue Pond off South Border Road in Medford (Google Maps location here). Parking is available at the South Border Road Parking Lot (Google Maps location here).
We will use the Earthwise Aware Invasive Flora Patrol project on Anecdata to map locations of common invasive plant species found in the Fells. Guidance on downloading, registering, and joining the project can be found here. Tools and light work gloves will be provided; feel free to bring personal tools or gloves. Please bring a hat, sunscreen, your own reusable water bottle, and a snack, if you would like one. We recommend wearing sturdy shoes, warm gloves, long sleeves, long socks, and long pants to help prevent poison ivy or tick exposure. We will be working outdoors, so please bring or wear sunscreen and/or insect repellent. Please note, there are no restrooms at this site.
