- Great Miami River Trail Smart-guided Selfie Cycle Tour

All along the way is the Great Miami River with hints of the former Miami and Erie Canal - a great tour for a relaxing, level adventure.

This 24-mile bikeway tour will take you along the scenic Great Miami River and the historic remnants of the Miami and Erie Canal. A dog-friendly, midway tasty spot is en route where you can grab a bite, a beverage, or just a rest moment before continuing the tour. There are also several other tasty options in the area.

The route follows the topography of the Great Miami River shoreline, which is relatively flat. There are a couple of segments where you might use a bit of bike gear, but nothing to work up too much of a sweat over. Speaking of sweating - it's optional. You set your pace, starting time, and touring agenda with CycleNuts' expert smart-guided cycle tour pattern. On some short segments, you will be sharing the road with motor vehicles. This is mostly an un-shaded trail, so remember to bring the sunhats and lotion, and perhaps plan on an early morning or evening adventure if hot, sunny rides are not your cup of tea.

Besides the adventure of the bike trail itself, there are some other things along the way to make this tour a memorable event. Check out the following points of interest on the route:

  • Hamilton - Hamilton was founded in 1791 as Fort Hamilton, named after the Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton. The fort served as a supply station for the troops of Generals Arthur St. Clair and Anthony Wayne.
  • Great Miami River - Originating upstream from Indian Lake, the Great Miami River flows 170 miles southwest to its confluence with the Ohio River west of Cincinnati.
  • Great Miami River Trail - Hugging the Great Miami River Valley for nearly all its route, this winding trail follows US Bike Route 25 and in some places the former Miami and Erie Canal. Named Best Bike Trail in Ohio by Ohio Magazine in 2019, it passes through a dozen charming downtowns, including Hamilton, Fairfield, Middletown, Franklin, and Dayton.
  • Rentschler Forest MetroPark - The park has over 400 acres that include acres of woodland, about a half-mile frontage along the Great Miami River, remnants of the old Miami-Erie Canal, a reconstructed wetland, and ample opportunities for a wide variety of outdoor recreation activities.
