May is a beautiful time to visit Skagit Land Trust's Guemes Mountain Conservation Area! Join SLT staff and land steward volunteers for a hike up Guemes Mountain on Sunday, May 18th. Jack Hartt, local hiking expert and author of Hiking Close to Home, will be our guide as we enjoy the trail and the Camas in bloom.
Due to limited parking at the trailhead and on the ferry, we recommend that you either carpool OR walk on the Guemes Island ferry in Anacortes and allow us to shuttle you to the trailhead. It is wise to arrive at the ferry about 30 minutes early, especially if you are driving in a group. Once you land on Guemes Island, proceed by car to the Guemes Mountain trailhead or walk to the ferry parking lot to meet SLT staff and volunteers who will shuttle you to over to meet about a dozen other participants and start your hike.* We will be leading three groups of hikers up the mountain at different times over the course of the morning:
- Group 1 gets in line at the ferry at 8:30am, catches the 9am ferry, and starts at the trail around 9:30am.
- Group 2 gets in ferry line at 9:15am, catches the 9:45am ferry, and starts at the trail around 10:15am.
- Group 3 gets in ferry line at 10:15, catches the 10:45am ferry, and starts at the trail around 11:15am.
Once you land on Guemes Island, SLT staff and volunteers will shuttle you to the Guemes Mountain Trailhead.
After the hike, SLT staff and volunteers will shuttle participants back to the ferry terminal. Participants should plan on catching the return ferry at 1pm or 1:30pm. (There is also an 11:15am return ferry, but it is unlikely that any of the groups will finish the hike in time for that one). There is a store that serves lunch near the terminal on Guemes Island, so people may want to go there for lunch while they wait for the ferry. Note: There is also an option to visit Dog Woods together in the afternoon, after the hike. We will provide more information about that opportunity as the date approaches.
Space for this event is limited, and Eventbrite registration is required! Click the red button above to reserve your spot.
*The hike is approximately 2.4 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of 550 feet. Click here to read more about this trail. Please bring anything you need for hiking, such as water, snacks or lunch, bug spray, sunscreen, a hat, gloves if needed, walking stick if needed, and comfortable, warm, waterproof jackets and hiking boots/shoes.
