About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

Democracy starts at the local level and that’s our focus when the Granite State Democracy Tour stops in Portsmouth. See the knitted New Hampshire State House created by many NH citizens. Listen to authors read from their books about school children who get involved in city government.

Take your knowledge of civics to a new level with presentations that address questions like:

What’s involved in running a town or city? How are decisions made in the community?

How can citizens (even children) engage with their local government without being an elected official?

How do rules set by the state legislature impact voting at town meetings? Are the rules for voting in NH the same as the rest of the country?

Engage in conversations with the speakers and connect with fellow citizens passionate about democracy.

Drop in and stay as long as you like. Participate in a family-friendly craft activity. Refreshments will be provided.

Speakers:

Nancy Pearson – civic evangelist and author of Smalltown City and the Spirit of City Hall

Christy Mihaly – children’s book author, Free for You and Me: What Our First Amendment Means

Steven Borne, President, Rye Civic League; Editor, Common Denominator Newsletter

Eve Jacobs-Carnahan, organizer of Knit Democracy Together

Organized by

The Coalition for Open Democracy is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2009 by a group of campaign finance reform activists, including the legendary Doris "Granny D" Haddock.

Our mission is political equality for all through an open, accountable, trusted government free from the corruption of big money politics.

We work to increase civic participation and restore accountable government in New Hampshire and the nation.

Through our project NH Rebellion, more than 3,000 "Rebels" have walked a cumulative total of more than 40,000 miles to get Big Money out of politics. These modern-day "Rebels" are carrying on the legacy of Granny D -- who famously walked across the United States to raise public support for the McCain-Feingold Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act.

Open Democracy works across partisan lines to educate and advocate for public funding of campaigns. Here in New Hampshire, voters of all political ideologies are concerned about donor influence: eight-out-of-ten of us believe special interests have more influence than voters. Almost two-thirds of voters support a system of public campaign funding that could balance the influence of Big Money in state elections -- including 50% of Republicans, 68% of Independents and 70% of Democrats.

We also support other reforms including redistricting, disclosure and protection of voters' rights.
