About this event

  • Event lasts 7 hours

Two of the most important skills of an effective community leader is the ability to:

1. Facilitate group discussions

2. Help groups make decisions together in a way that engages all the voices in the group

Youth leaders play a critical part in necessary community change, but too often, young people get thrown into the role of facilitator without having been taught the fundamentals and/or the chance to practice. In this workshop, you will have an opportunity to practice and receive feedback with other youth leaders in a fun, interactive, and non-threatening environment.

In this full-day in-person workshop designed for youth and young adult leaders, participants will:

Learn fundamental skills of Facilitating Conversations in these areas:

  • Content Neutrality
  • Asking Good Questions
  • Active Listening
  • Keeping on Track

Share Meeting Planning & Management Skills:

  • Learn how to plan an agenda that helps the group meet their outcomes
  • Learn tips and tricks of both in-person and online meeting management
  • Learn a method for planning any meeting or training
  • Learn ways to facilitate more effective decision making processes.

Facilitated through a lens of equity and inclusion, Mike and Ashley want to help you apply these skills to your next meeting, convening or workshop - online or in-person!

Mike Beebe (he/his/him) has more than 30 years of experience working with thousands of individuals, groups and organizations to build leadership and facilitation skills for a more equitable world. His in-person and virtual workshops are designed to be highly interactive, creating a safe space to learn essential skills and practice with feedback. Past participants express appreciation for Mike’s support of multiple learning styles and the level of participant engagement.

Ashley Barnes-Cocke (they/them) is a queer youth homelessness expert, focused on putting power and resources into young people’s hands. They have spent nearly 15 years working at the intersection of youth homelessness, youth leadership development, and facilitating community-level system change efforts. Ashley believes that people with lived experience have the best ideas for improving the systems they interact with, and when we include youth voices in creating the systems that affect them, not only will they do better, but our policies, programs and systems will be better. Ashley is an expert in supporting young people’s brilliance to shine in program design, system change, and research and evaluation.
