About this event

  • Event lasts 5 hours

(Our cover Florida Scrub-Jay photo was taken at the Lyonia Preserve by Cheryl Beeler in January 2025).

Lyonia Preserve is a joint project of Volusia County, the Volusia County School Board, and the State of Florida to provide environmental education to the public and restore and maintain habitat for scrub-dependent species, including the threatened scrub jay and gopher tortoise.

The preserve, named after the scrub plant Rusty Lyonia, consists of 360 acres of restored Florida scrub habitat.

We will meet at the Environmental Center parking lot - where there is plenty of parking - about 8:45 to get on the trail by 9AM, when the Preserve opens.

The Preserve is about an hour and a half drive from World Golf Village. A bit longer for Ponte Vedra. The address is:

2150 Eustace Ave, Deltona, FL 32725

We plan to walk the orange and red trail, which is about a 1.5 mile loop.

After the walk, we can briefly explore the Environmental Center.

There is a picnic area if you want to pack a lunch, or we can stop at a Panera’s in Daytona on the way back. If interested in carpooling or lunch at Panera's, please let Mary know at maryc@stjohnsaudubon.com.

We encourage you to consider joining the St. Johns Regional Audubon. You can join for as little as $15/year, which can help us continue and expand our work. To join, follow this link: https://stjohnsaudubon.com/membership/
