Each month we will be featuring (& playing) a family-friendly card, board or parlour game of esoteric & historic note.
APRIL'S GAME
The Game of Philosophers
Based loosely on the traditional Japanese game of Uta-garuta (歌ガルタ) or "Poetry Cards" (originally played with matching seashells), the Game of Philosophers is played with the striking 22-card Philosopher's Deck by Sharin N. Elkholy, PhD & a hat full of quotations from 22 philosophers—from Zarathustra to Anzaldúa—so insightfully depicted on its cards.
HOW TO PLAY
A double-decked 44-card Philosopher's Deck is dealt out, each player receiving 4 cards (i.e. philosophers).
The players take turns pulling a quote from Manly's hat & reading it out loud to the rest of the players.
Example: "The wound is the place where the light enters you."
Each player then has the option to play or pass.
If you think you know which philosopher said the quote & you have their card (or you just want to gamble), you place that philosopher face-down in front of you.
When all the players have played or passed, the face-down philosophers are flipped up & everyone finds out who is the author of the quote.
If you were right, you get to discard your card.If you were wrong, you have to keep your card AND you must draw another philosopher from the deck.
The first player to get rid of all their cards—to free themselves of all these pesky philosophers—wins.
And yes, of course, you are always welcome to bring your own games to share.
