Walking the Walk: Equity in Artist Application and Selection Processes

Wednesday, April 2, 2025 and Thursday, April 3, 2025

10am - 1pm PDT / 1 - 4pm EDT / 7-10pm CEST daily

The application process is often the first point of contact that artists will have with your program. What does this first impression communicate to your applicants? How does this experience set the tone and expectations for the relationship?

Each stage of the call, application, and selection process offers opportunities for you to demonstrate your organization’s values. How can you develop the most thoughtful, inviting application process? How can you ensure that your selection process is as transparent, inclusive, and accessible as possible?

Join us for this two-day intensive, where we will examine the many elements involved in designing a thoughtful invitation, application, and selection process.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Evaluate current program artist application / RFQ practices
  • Assess current program selection processes
  • Explore more expansive or alternative application and selection practices
  • Gain new approaches to equity in the application / selection processes

See the Agenda for each day's schedule!

*we will take a mid-program 10 minute break each day

Anywhere New is Unfamiliar: Re-Assessing Access in Residency Artist Support

Wednesday, May 7, 2025 and Thursday, May 8, 2025

10am - 1pm PDT / 1 - 4pm EDT / 7-10pm CEST daily

We know that access can mean many things to different people and that assumptions and expectations about how our programs support artists can sometimes be unspoken. How can we better understand and communicate our own assumptions and goals and set up our artists and residency operators for successful residency experiences?

Through your thoughtful invitation process, you have selected your cohort and are making plans for their arrival. What steps can you take to ensure that all involved staff and artists understand how they contribute to the experience? How can you orient and steward your artists through their residency, considering not only the time they spend in and around your facilities, but in the communities and neighborhoods in which you are located?

Each stage of your program offers opportunities for you to demonstrate your organization’s values. How can you develop the most thoughtful, inviting and honest system to serve each individual artist while evolving and protecting your organization in the long run? How can you ensure that your artist support is as transparent, inclusive, and equitable as possible?

Join us for this two-day intensive, where we will explore the strategies and practices for welcoming, inclusive, and accessible artist residency programs.

Frequently asked questions

What can I expect from this workshop?

Attendees can expect a mix of interactive exercises and informative presentations, along with space for interaction and Q&A’s. You will receive a Participant Packet the week of the workshop that offers additional resources to continue expanding and honing the skills you’ll be developing.

Can I share my registration with my colleagues?

No; one registration equals one virtual seat. We will remove participants from the workshop who do not follow this policy. If two colleagues from the same organization wish to attend, we offer a highly discounted Two-fer rate option at checkout.

I would like to split the series registration among different staff. Can we do that?

Yes; you may elect to send one staff person from your organization or program to each workshop. You must let ACA staff know who will be attending at least 5 business days in advance of the session. As with all workshops, one registration is meant for one virtual seat.

How do I know if I am a current member of the ACA Network?

If you are not sure of your organization’s status or whether your membership is current - drop us a line! Please write to members@artistcommunities.org to confirm.

Can I pay by check?

Because registration tracking and event links are processed through Eventbrite, attendees must register through this portal. Eventbrite accepts credit card payments as well as PayPal. If you need to pay through your organization’s bank account, check to see whether it is linked to PayPal.

I need an accessibility accommodation that is not listed.

ACA is committed to providing full access to all. All workshops will be closed captioned and we are happy to book ASL and engage other services as needed. Please send additional accessibility inquiries and requests to programs@artistcommunities.org at least 5 business days before the session.

Something came up and I can no longer attend my session. What should I do?

If you are not able to make it for any reason, you may transfer your registration to a colleague or board member at your organization. Please let us know so we can update your registration: email programs@artistcommunities.org.

I attended EPI24 and gave feedback, where is my discount code?

Email us at programs@artistcommunities.org and we will send it to you! This additional 10% discount applies to all tickets. If you are also an ACA Network Member, you can only use one of your promo codes at checkout.

Will I have access to a recording of this workshop?

No, these workshops will not be recorded, but all registered participants will receive the artifacts.

I still have a question, who can I ask?

Email the ACA Programs Team anytime at programs@artistcommunities.org
