About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 45 minutes

Do For One is a relationship building program based in NYC that brings isolated people with disabilities into greater community life through the power of one-on-one, freely given, enduring relationships across societal barriers. In our history, we have introduced over 130 one-to-one supportive relationships and support 95 enduring relationships to date.

In this introductory session you will learn about Do For One’s approach in addressing the core issue of devaluation that people with disabilities face and why personal and freely-given relationships is our response.

We ask, “What is stopping us from forming relationships across societal barriers and how can we overcome them?”

Agenda:

Doors open @ 7:15PM. Please try to arrive on time so we can begin promptly at 7:30 PM.

The presentation will run promptly from 7:30 - 8:45PM. You will gain a deeper understanding of the history and philosophy behind Do For One’s mission. You will hear stories about real Do For One relationships and learn about a number of ways for you to support our mission and get involved.

There will be time from 8:45 - 9:15PM for Q+A and one on one conversations with Do For One Staff. We would love to get to know you and what interests you about Do For One's mission!

If you are running late, and your time of arrival is later than 7:40PM, we ask that you attend a future session instead as attending the FULL orientation is a requirement for participants in our program.

The workshop will be led by:

Andrew Oliver, Do For One’s Founder & Executive Director

Jane Yoon, Do For One’s Program Director

Devon Ray Hillary, Do For One Partner & Emcee

Once you register for the orientation session through Eventbrite, you will be e-mailed more information and reminders leading up to the event.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the target audience?

This workshop is for volunteers who are interested in contributing their time and resources to become a long-term, supportive presence to a person with a disability who experiences social isolation in NYC. If you are moving away from NYC soon, this opportunity is likely not the best match for you.

If I am in need of services or support, should I attend this orientation?

If you are a person with a disability, or a family member of a person with a disability, and are looking to receive support through Do For One's relationship building program, please email info@doforone.org so we can set up a personal phone call with you.

Which areas of NYC do you serve?

Please note that in 2025, our primary focus is serving people living in Manhattan and West/Central Queens, and a smaller number in Brooklyn and Bronx. We welcome people living anywhere near NYC to get involved, but please know it is unlikely you will be matched with someone outside of those areas.

What population does your organization serve?

We serve adults (generally 21 and older) who have any kind of disability - physical or intellectual. More importantly, we serve adults who experience "profound social isolation," defined as someone who largely lacks relationships with people that are not paid relationships.
