Vampire Hunter D began in 1983 as a series of novels by Hideyuki Kikuchi and Yoshitaka Amano, and follows the dhampir (half-vampire) D as he travels across a post-apocalyptic world. It is a blend of gothic horror, science fiction, western, and fantasy, and takes vampire folklore and molds it into something new.
