The Civil War and the Potomac River

In the 1860s, life on the Potomac River was quite different than it is today. Instead of the calm open waters, the river was the frontline of battle. The Potomac was the main lifeline out of Washington D.C. and for the federal government it was the dividing line between the warring sections of the North and South. In this talk, Museum Division Manager and author Karen Stone will bring to life the events that took place on the river and what the people on the shores were up to during those four long years.

Frequently asked questions

What if the weather is bad?

We plan to cruise in the rain or sunshine. Wind will be our determining factor. Please plan accordingly and bring rain gear, if forecasted. Should the Captain see the need to cancel the cruise, a call will go out around 1:30 PM. That does not mean that if the weather changes that he cannot cancel.
