About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours 30 minutes

Join Amy Chiu, a Harvard x UC Berkeley Learning Designer, to build your own Garden City out of cardboard & recycled materials at the Boston Public Market!

Together, we'll explore community design and create more "greenery for good." We'll transform overlooked spaces into thriving plant havens, see how flora & fauna shape our world, and dream up innovative gardens. From towering hydroponic structures to parking lots-turned-veggie patches, we'll ideate ways that people & plants can flourish together. Using cardboard & recycled materials, we'll prototype our own Garden Cities and explore how city design, human connections, and wild imagination collide to create our sense of place. Let's redesign the blueprint of our cities - starting with us!

This workshop is perfect for:

🛠️ All tinkerers ages 7-12

💡Young curious minds interested in a cardboard creators community

👨‍👧‍👦 Parents looking to spark their kids’ creativity & critical thinking skills

👥Families who want to connect with other families in Boston

About Amy Chiu:

Hey hey! I’m Amy & I’m on a mission to create the biggest cardboard creators community EVER so that every kid has a place to spark their creativity…starting with Boston! I’m so, so excited to build some awesome creations together at BPM :)

TLDR - I'm a Harvard Ed School x UC Berkeley alum who's run 100+ workshops both online & in person for 250+ kids across the past 4 years! I spent my time at the Harvard Graduate School of Education obsessing over kids’ creativity in the Learning Design, Innovation & Technology program where I co-conceptualized an interactive sensory-based game, helped redesign a toy table with an MIT startup, and developed paintable playspaces for preschoolers.

Before that, I studied linguistics, media, & education at UC Berkeley, then hopped over to BümoBrain, an online preschool where I managed operations for learning kits. I even did a stint at Suffolk (for any Boston-based construction nerds)!

I’m obsessed with designing one-of-a-kind learning experiences that are accessible to all, and can’t wait to see where our wildest, wackiest ideas take us at BPM!

Boston Public Market is an indoor, year-round marketplace featuring over 30 New England artisans and food producers housed under one roof offering fresh groceries, prepared meals, crafts, specialty items, and local libations. Visit us in the heart of Downtown Boston at 100 Hanover Street.

As a nonprofit organization, the Boston Public Market Association is a “Market on a Mission” to: celebrate the bounty of all New England has to offer; nurture and support food growers, producers, and entrepreneurs who have barriers to fully participate in the market; educate neighbors and visitors on the importance of a resilient and equitable food system, local sourcing, and nutrition; celebrate, deepen, and cultivate a diverse community around food.
