Data science. You encounter it every day. It touches most areas of our lives, our work, even our homes. But what is it, really?
On April 11, Woman’s City Club is bringing data scientist Cathy O’Neil, author of Weapons of Math Destruction: How Big Data Increases Inequality and Threatens Democracy, to Memorial Hall for our 31st National Speaker Forum. O’Neil will give a lively and insightful presentation on how algorithms and big data are widely used in healthcare, housing, hiring practices, college admissions, policing and criminal justice systems, and more, often at the cost of equity and fairness — and offer strategies to ensure transparency, accountability, and fairness.
To set the stage for that Forum, we invite you to join us on Wednesday, March 26, at 7pm on Zoom for a conversation with a local expert in the field — Erin St. Jeor, AVP|Decision Science Manager at Fifth Third Bank.
Erin, an elementary school teacher turned data scientist who now leads a decision sciences team, first read Weapons of Math Destruction while in grad school. It motivated her to learn more about the detailed steps she could take to prevent biased results and to embed values into her algorithms. It shaped her mission to use data science as a force for good. Erin is passionate about her work, enthusiastic when she talks about this critical and growing field, and looking forward to answering all your questions.
Whether you are a techie or a math phobe, coming to the National Speaker Forum or just wanting to learn more about data science and its impact, we hope you will join us for this excellent program.
