Comics are a sequential graphic form that includes visuals and text to tell a story. The inclusion of visuals in addition to written expression, deliberate sequencing of events, and continual revision throughout the creative process are just a few of the attributes of this versatile and adaptable format that can be applied to many educational settings, regardless of (perceived) artistic expertise. Citing case studies in comics scholarship from Nick Sousanis, Lynda Barry, and others, this session aims to highlight benefits and applications of comics in higher education settings, for both students and tutors alike.
In this two-hour hands-on virtual workshop. participants will engage in guided and interactive drawing and writing activities and receive a digital slide deck containing key points and additional resources.
By the end of the session, participants should be able to:
- Identify key components and terminology of comics
- Differentiate between reflective practices and incorporate them into the comics form
- Experience the creative/reflective cycle through personal practice and peer support
- Adopt comics practices into your own daily pedagogy and continued professional development
Pre-session work: consider recent moments and events from your teaching that you wish to explore further.
Bio: Rachel Branham (she/her) is an educator living and working in London. Her graphic novel, What's So Great About Art, Anyway? A Teacher's Odyssey was published by Teachers College Press in 2016. She is a Capricorn who enjoys black coffee.
