Changes in Pennsylvania Demography
In the coming decades, Pennsylvania will experience three significant demographic shocks: rural depopulation, aging population, and a decrease in birth rates. These demographic changes will affect a wide range of policy issues throughout the Commonwealth. This session will explore the historical roots of these demographic trends and highlight their regional differences. Furthermore, this session will discuss how in-migration patterns (both domestic and international) have bolstered the population of many communities. Finally, this session will highlight the work of the newly formed Pennsylvania Rural Population Revitalization Commission as it seeks to address issues caused by demographic change.  Audience members will have the chance to offer policy suggestions and feedback to inform the Commission’s work in its first year.
