About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

Did you know that California is home to over 1,600 species of native bees? The majority are actually quite docile and don't even sting! These often-overlooked pollinators play an essential role in sustaining our ecosystems, and many rely on native plants for food and shelter. From the tiniest fairy bees to the fluffiest bumblebees and everything in between. In this class, we’ll dive into the incredible world of California’s cute and busy bees—exploring their lifecycles, nesting habits, and the unique relationships they share with our local flora. Which will we spot in our gardens?

We’ll learn tips about bee-friendly habitats - whether in a backyard, the park, or your balcony.

This class combines indoor learning with time for observation in the Theodore Payne Foundation's beautiful gardens! Please come prepared with water, sun protection, and closed-toe shoes.

Maryanne Pittman is the Director of Public Programs at the Theodore Payne Foundation and a Certified California Naturalist. She holds degrees in Fine Art and Biology, and specializes in conservation education.
