About this event

  • Event lasts 14 days 2 hours

How do some plants make do with far less water than others? How do plants defend against sun damage? How do they survive fire and drought? How do plants connect with other organisms in the ecosystem?

Let's take a deep dive into the science of it all! Biology professor and master gardener Valerie Wong will address these questions and more in a special three-part course developed especially with native plant gardeners in mind! Great for botany enthusiasts and gardeners of all skill levels looking for a deeper understanding of how plants respond to their environment.

All without leaving the comfort of your own home or office!

Class meets three times online:

Friday, May 16th, 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Friday, May 23rd, 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Friday, May 30th, 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm

This class will be held online via Zoom and recorded. Login instructions will be included in the reminder emails. Students will have access to a recording of each session for 2 weeks from the date it is issued.

Valerie Wong teaches a variety of college biology courses at PCC and Cal State LA along with Botany and Plant Taxonomy and Identification in the UCLA Extension Horticulture and Gardening program. Valerie earned a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Wellesley College and a Ph.D. in Plant and Microbial Biology at UC Berkeley. In her down time, Valerie serves as a UC Master Gardener for LA County and is a sometimes successful, always enthusiastic gardener who happily eliminated her front yard in favor of flowering, low-water shrubberies.
