About this event

A book launch. A test funeral. Yes to both. The dress code is “fabulous” for this evening with Jean Grae, celebrating the launch of her book, In My Remaining Years. Moderated by John Hodgman. Books, signings, reading, conversation, audience Q&A...special guests.

In My Remaining Years is a collection of darkly humorous, intensely personal essays that debunk the myth that coming-of-age narratives should be reserved for the kids, providing a much-needed rallying cry for those of us still trying to figure it out in our forties. These laugh-out-loud essays cover everything from aging gracefully (with and without botox), what happens when you look for community and almost start a cult, befriending childhood demons (Hi Mumm-ra!), gender fluidity in middle age, the cost of being too fabulous, and the various gymnastics we do to avoid becoming our parents, taking us from her childhood in 1980s New York City to present-day Baltimore. In these pages, Jean captures magic in a bottle, distilling the feeling of hanging out with your smartest, funniest, and most brutally honest best friend.

Jean Grae is a multidisciplinary artist, humorist, and former rapper with over 25 years of experience in the entertainment industry. She’s collaborated with influential musicians including The Roots, and Robert Glasper and her prolific body of work is featured at the National Museum of African American History and Culture. In 2019, the Public Theater commissioned her one-person show, Jeanius, which played for a limited time to sold-out audiences in New York City. She currently resides in Baltimore with her shared-custody cat, Littles. In My Remaining Years is her first book

Frequently asked questions

1. How does the book bundle ticket purchase work?

The book bundle ticket includes a signed copy of In My Remaining Years, which you can pick up upon check in at the event.

2. Is there a dress code?

Great question. Jean gently demands that you wear something very fabulous. Veils? Capes? Drapes? Caftans? Gowns? Suits? YES. At her real funeral - it would be mandatory. You don't have to wear all black unless you want to.

3. Can I take pictures and video?

Yes! Please don't livestream the event, and please don't film the entire thing and post it. There will be opportunities to take pictures with Jean and her clone. Please do share pics of the event! Tell people you had a good time, even if it's a lie.

4. Is Jean dying? Should I be worried?

In the sense that we will all inevitably be dead, sure...Jean is "dying." Probably not soon though. We'll see. *motions to America*

5. Will there be rap music - specifically done by Jea--

No. Don't ask. That was over a long time ago. You can read about why in the BOOK.

6. Can I purchase In My Remaining Years at this book launch?

You absolutely can!
