About this event

Experience the Bethany Beach to Ocean City seashore by bike!

Experience two boardwalks by bike - Bethany Beach and Ocean City! Explore beaches, bars, amusements, museums, and more fun along the way.

Begin at the charming Bethany Beach Boardwalk, explore the numerous attractions along this gorgeous stretch of Atlantic seashore south to the second boardwalk of Ocean City, Maryland, and on the return visit the gorgeous Fenwick Island State Park Beach. From boardwalks to beaches, bars, museums, amusement parks, restaurants, art shops, unique boutiques, and people-watching there is no shortage of discovery opportunities while enjoying this fantastic Atlantic coast environment by bike.

Ride the planks, or park your bike and take a short stroll on the third-of-a-mile Bethany Beach Boardwalk. From May 15th through September 30th biking is allowed on the boardwalk between the hours of 6:00 AM – 9:00 AM. Experience the mile-long ocean beach on one side and charming boardwalk shops on the other. Bethany Beach is described as relaxing, quaint, homey, quiet, and “dedicated to providing a clean, safe, family atmosphere”. It is quite an alternative to the massive entertainment-focused second boardwalk on the tour in Ocean City.

From Bethany Beach Boardwalk, the adventure heads south with a scenic vista stop at Little Assawoman Bay. Continuing on it passes through Ocean City to the boardwalk and a turnaround spot at the southernmost point of Ocean City Boardwalk where Assateague Island can be viewed in the distance across the ocean. Getting to that turnaround spot are loads of little shops, big shops, bars, restaurants, beaches, miles of boardwalk, museums, people watching, entertainment, amusement parks, attractions, and city parks. Adventure awaits all along the way. Often there are festivals, community events, and live music in parks along the route.

The three-mile-long Ocean City Boardwalk allows bikes from Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, between 2:00 a.m. and noon; from Tuesday after Labor Day through Friday before Memorial Day at any time subject to the following exceptions: Springfest and Sunfest (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday), between 2:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon of the same day; and off-Season: No Restrictions. You can ride the wooden planks or choose the cement pathway alongside it. With so much to see and take in, there is not enough room to provide an adequate list of recommendations.

The tour does not end once you leave Ocean City to return to Bethany Beach. The feature attraction on this part of the tour is Fenwick Island State Park Beach. "The white sand beaches gradually slope into the Atlantic, creating a broad swimming area patrolled by lifeguards during the summer... features a modern bathhouse, showers, changing rooms, park office, and a snack food concession." If you are planning to swim - this is the spot! It is CycleNuts tested and approved. Entrance to the park is free on foot and bike. A long line of motor vehicles is usually waiting to get into the park - but by bike, you ride past the line.

Most bikes are appropriate for this smart-guided tour. This 33-mile smart-guided route is 83% bikeway and comes with CycleNuts' 50% downhill guarantee. In most places, the bikeway is a full lane - big enough for buses, which share the lane. It follows the topography of the land, which is very flat. However, the ocean breeze may - at times - give you some opportunity to use your bike's climbing gears.

Sweating is optional but perhaps unavoidable due to the wondrous sunshine and oceanfront humidity. You set your pace, starting time, and touring agenda with CycleNuts' expert Smart-guided Selfie Cycle Tour guide. Keep in mind that seasonally, bicycles must be off of the Ocean City boardwalk between 12 noon and 2 AM and the Bethany Beach Boardwalk between 9 AM and 6 AM.

Points of interest along the way: Ocean City, Ocean City Boardwalk, Fenwick Island State Park and Beach, Bethany Beach Boardwalk, Atlantic Ocean, Little Assawoman Bay, two CycleNuts tested and approved optional tasty spots Brass Balls Saloon and Big Peckers Bar & Grill the area is so chock full of interesting places to see and experience - much more than can be listed here.
