On Saturday March 22nd, join The Jaxson’s Mike Field for a guided walking tour of Avondale, one of Jacksonville’s most enduring historic neighborhoods.
Built during the height of the Great Florida Land Boom of the 1920s, the Avondale development was billed as "Riverside's Residential Ideal", which was "...desirable because the right kind of people have recognized its worth and because the wrong kind of people can find property more to their liking elsewhere."
Almost destroyed in the 1960s as the housing stock was deteriorating and crime was rising, neighbors pulled together to turn the neighborhood around based on historic preservation. It was listed as a National Register Historic District in 1989.
With its curved roadways and grassy rights of way, Avondale has stood out as Jacksonville's most desirable neighborhood for many decades, just as it was when it was first built more than a century ago.
Together we'll explore the neighborhood's past, present and future. Before or after, guests can wander the Shoppes of Avondale commercial district featuring cute boutiques, quaint coffee shops and some of the city's best restaurants.
