Frequently asked questions

Can I sit with my friends?

We'll seat each adult/child pair together, and if you sign up for less than a table of 8, we'll combine groups to create a team of 8. Round up 8 friends and purchase a table for an afternoon of fun!

Will the questions require that we know certain books?

The questions will be across a wide range of genres, formats, and authors. We don't anticipate anyone will know all the answers, but we're sure everyone will know some of the answers. There will be questions that grown-ups may be more able to answer, and some that younger readers might know.

Will there be food or drink available?

We'll have some simple snacks and water available, but this isn't a food-focused event. Feel free to bring your own snacks if you'd like

Are the tickets tax-deductible?

Yes, all proceeds benefit An Open Book Foundation, is a DC-based 501(c)3 organization that brings authors and illustrators into Title 1 schools for engaging literacy events. Regardless of the format, each participating students receives a copy of the featured title, signed by the guest presenter.

An Open Book Foundation connects Washington DC-area students with authors, illustrators, and their books to nurture a lifelong love of reading. We support educational justice by building equitable access to interactive literacy enrichment and high-quality books.

Our vision is that children see themselves as readers, who use their written and visual literacy skills to navigate a complex world and define their own future. We offer a range of engaging and enriching small group literacy activities to PreK-Grade 12 students in Washington, DC-area Title 1 schools. At every event, regardless of the format, each participating student receives a copy of the featured book for their personal library, and we donate additional books from the author or illustrator to participating classroom and school libraries. Each year, we reach over 10,000 students and distribute more than 12,000 books.
