Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad

Smart-guided Bike-Aboard Tour - Akron, OH

Experience Cuyahoga Valley National Park by bike...and train! Perhaps the most beautiful crushed stone bikeway in Ohio - the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail. It lies deep within the magnificent Cuyahoga Valley National Park between Cleveland and Akron, Ohio. The flat hard-packed crushed stone bikeway follows the towpath, diverting at points to wind alongside, over, and in-between the Cuyahoga River and Ohio & Erie Canal through woods and fields.

The Cuyahoga Valley National Park runs between two major cities - Cleveland and Akron - yet once one descends into the lavish wooded greenery of the valley the racket of the city is replaced with the sounds of rushing river rapids, the chatter of multiple sorts of wildlife inhabitants and the gentle symphony of nature only to be interrupted by the occasional passing by of people enjoying the trail or river, celebrating the great outdoors.

The Selfie Cycle Tour begins with a train ride, where your bike is transported along with you to the CVSR's temporary northern train depot stop. Once there, you continue on your bike to the temporarily closed Rockside Station and then back on your bike to the starting spot at the southernmost train depot. Several train station depots are set along the towpath where you can wave down any southbound train to return to the starting spot. The $5 train ride ticket is not included with the tour purchase. Here is a link to the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad train schedule to coordinate your tour plans.

This 56-mile roundtrip smart-guided route is 14 miles of train riding (if only riding the train one way), 92% bikeway, and does not come with CycleNuts' 50% downhill guarantee (because...well... you are riding the train part of the way). Sweating is optional. Except for connector ramps from the canal to the train station, the route will see very little use of your bike's gearing. You set the pace, starting time, guest list (or, just you), and touring agenda with CycleNuts' expert smart-guided cycle tour pattern.

Points of interest: Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, Ohio and Erie Canal, Cuyahoga River, Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail, Frazee House, Boston Mill Visitor Center, and Canal Exploration Center. Optional tasty stops at Yours Truly and Lock 15 Brewing Company (CycleNuts tested and approved tasty spots)

Routes may include dedicated bicycle lanes on streets, bicycle ‘friendly’ streets, and of necessity, regular streets, parking lots, sidewalks, and unpaved trails. Darkness may be experienced on evening or early morning rides. Lights in good working order at all times on CycleNuts tours are a great idea – to be seen and to see!

Emergency road support – if necessary – may be a creative, collective group effort or you may need to fend for yourself. Be prepared with options.

Air pump. Wrench kit. Cycle lock. Water. Energy bar. Funds for refreshment breaks and emergencies. Sun screen. Pest repellent.

Recommended Preparation – Pre-check (before you load that bike for transport to the starting spot) brakes, tire pressure, lights, and rideability. Consider what you are wearing on tour and what you may need for changing weather conditions.

Yes – CycleNuts will offer cycling events in all four seasons – what else could be expected from CycleNuts?
