AIA Florida Southwest has organized an AIA CEU tour of Florida Southern College in Lakeland, renowned for its beautiful campus and historic collection of buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Join us for a behind-the-scenes guided tour of the largest group of structures designed by Wright at a single campus.
NOTE: THIS IS A WALKING TOUR. THE BUS WILL TAKE US TO LAKELAND ONLY.
We are now able to visit the recently refurbished 1958 Polk Science Building and Planetarium, and the 1952 Ordway Building which will soon become a studio for the new FSC School of Architecture.
The campus includes the 1941 Annie Pfeiffer Chapel at the physical and spiritual center of campus, the 1941 Raulerson Seminar Buildings, 1945 original Roux Library, 1946 Esplanades, 1948 Water Dome, 1949 Watson-Fine complex, and the 1955 Danforth Chapel. Visits to some of the buildings may be limited by FSC events. A portion of the time will be made available for attendees to visit the FLW Foundation Visitors Center and a Usonian House located directly across the street from FSC.
The AIA/HSW CEU program starts with a light lunch in the historic Hollis Room and a presentation by AIA Florida Southwest and the FLW Foundation. Lunch options will be available for anyone with restricted dietary needs. After touring the campus, the program will conclude at the Hollis Room with snacks, refreshments, and a Q&A session to discuss the buildings.
Please note the tour involves walking the entire campus, a few hills, some ramps, and up & down a lot of steps. Anyone needing a break from the walking is welcome to wait at the Hollis Room or at the Starbucks in Tutu’s Cyber Cafe at the Water Dome. Please check weather forecasts and dress accordingly.
This is an all-day event sponsored by SESCO Lighting, and includes transportation from Naples and Ft Myers to Lakeland. Many thanks to Bill Snyder, for without the generous support of SESCO this tour would not have been possible.
