Phoenix Books Rutland is excited to host Vermont author Jessica Johnson to discuss her new book, A Thousand Miles to Rome: Joy, Sorrow, Triumph and Everything In Between on The Via Francigena. Follow Jessica's journey with us as she first walks solo, and then with her loyal Labrador Retriever, Drogon, through the scenic paths of England, France, Switzerland, and Italy in pursuit of a dream.
A Thousand Miles to Rome is more than just a travel memoir; it's a testament to the strength of the human soul. Whether you're a pilgrim, an avid hiker, a history enthusiast, or simply seeking inspiration, this captivating tale of courage, patience and perseverance will leave an indelible mark on your heart.
In 2017 an adventure of a lifetime started in Canterbury, England with Rome as her ultimate destination. But life had other plans. When she reached the border of France and Switzerland, her father became ill and she returned home to be by his side. Eight months later, she returned to Europe, this time accompanied by her canine companion, to pick up where she left off. Together, they traversed 434 kilometers along the Via Francigena, only to face another setback when her mother needed her home.
In 2021, against all odds, she returned to Piacenza, Italy, ready to conquer the final leg of her pilgrimage. Through breathtaking landscapes, unexpected encounters, and moments of profound introspection, she discovered the true meaning of resilience, love, and the power of the human spirit.
Follow Jessica as she retraces the ancient footsteps of pilgrims and discovers that sometimes, the most transformative journeys are the ones that lead us home.
