The 8th Annual Hackensack Riverkeeper EarthFest Recycled Regatta is BACK!

We invite you have fun at Overpeck Creek while showing off your creativity, and encouraging the world to reduce, reuse and recycle! The Recycled Regatta is held in conjunction with our EarthFest celebration at Overpeck County Park on Sunday, May 18, 2025. Race starts at 10am.

This event promises to be an exciting, fun-filled experience for teams of all ages! Schools, Scouts, Families and STEM teams are invited to devise an imaginative way to turn common household recyclables into a human-powered boat!

Build your boat, launch it and race it! Trophies for the winners in four categories.

  • Have FUN!
  • Learn about the everyday disposable items that we can repurpose.
  • Discover what floats your boat! And learn about water displacement – Science!
  • Learn about the problems with plastic trash in your water.

Teams are also encouraged to raise funds for Hackensack Riverkeeper by recruiting local sponsors for their team. The team raising the most funds will receive a prize for all team members (up to 10 maximum). Proceeds benefit Hackensack Riverkeeper in our mission to protect, preserve and restore the Hackensack River.

Race participants should arrive by 9am, one hour prior to start time. Teams should have an adult crew captain plus 1-6 additional members. Boats should be built using common household recylable materials. A minimum of two crew must paddle the boat in the race. Age guidelines apply.

Organized by

Founded in 1997 by Captain Bill Sheehan, Hackensack Riverkeeper is the leading environmental organization working on Hackensack River issues. The group engages in a fourfold strategy of environmental action, advocacy, education and enforcement in its work to protect, preserve and restore the Hackensack River Watershed. Our ongoing efforts mean protected wetlands, cleanups of toxic sites, restored habitats, better public access, and a new appreciation for the “River of Many Bends”!
